Since 1971, Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Big Bend has been fulfilling its mission to help children in need to reach their potential through professionally supported one-to-one mentoring relationships with measurable impacts. Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Big Bend is an independent 501(c)(3) charitable organization with its Board of Directors which oversees all governnance and fundraising in Leon, Gadsden, Wakulla, Liberty, Madison, Jefferson, Taylor and Franklin Counties. Dollars raised locally stay local.
The organization depends on donations to help conduct background checks on volunteers to ensure child safety; to provide ongoing support and training for children, families and volunteers; and to build and sustain long-lasting relationships—the key to successful mentoring. Independent research proves the Big Brothers Big Sisters model improves a child’s chances for school success, nonviolent behavior, drug and alcohol avoidance, and healthy relationships. In 2010, Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Big Bend will create and provide professional support to approximately 310 mentoring relationships between children in need and caring adult mentors.
For more than 100 years, Big Brothers Big Sisters has operated under the belief that inherent in every child is the ability to succeed and thrive in life. Most children served by Big Brothers Big Sisters live in single-parent and low-income families, or households where a parent is incarcerated. As the nation’s largest donor and volunteer supported mentoring network, Big Brothers Big Sisters makes meaningful, monitored matches between adult volunteers (“Bigs”) and children (“Littles”). Providing a system of ongoing evaluation and support, Big Brothers Big Sisters is proven by independent studies to help families by improving the odds that Littles will perform better in school and avoid violence and illegal activities, and have stronger relationships with their parents and others. Headquartered in Philadelphia with a network of nearly 400 agencies across the country, Big Brothers Big Sisters serves a quarter million children annually.
